Rickman to be in Burton's Sweeney Todd

According to an interview Mr. Rickman did on the Canadian television show The Hour, he will be starring alongside Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter in Tim Burton's film version of the Sondheim musical Sweeney Todd.

For those unfamiliar with the story-Sweeney Todd is the story of a murderour barber who killed and robbed customers then shares his kills with the woman next door who runs a pie shop.
She in turn uses the corpses for pie-filling (think the British meat pie) and keeps his secret.

    NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Sweeney is my favorite musical in the world. The only character I can think of for Alan's age and someone who has a duet with Sweeney is Judge Turpin. Turpin is supposed to be mightily disgusting and vomit-inducing. I don't know how on earth it will work if he's attractive (and I just don't think they CAN make him unattractive!).

BTW, in the musical version of the Sweeney tale, Mrs. Lovett doesn't really "keep Sweeney's secret" - turning corpses into meat pies is her idea.

According to FilmFour, Sweeney Todd could have its “gore-content” toned down prior to its release. Warner Bros have stepped up the scale of the release and want to make it more family friendly, imposing a PG-13 rating for the movie. The film is set for a December 21st release in the USA and January 25th 2008 release in the UK.

Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd to be rendered bloodless by Warner Bros?

With Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd due to receive a wide release in the US this Christmas, there are fears that the film will not be as bloody and out there as fans might have been anticipating. Since Warner Bros. see Johnny Depp's barber - a cockney serial killer, lest we forget - as a marketable entity, Sweeney Todd looks set for the sort of opening usually reserved for family comedies. In a report on the picture, the 'New York Post' stressed that Burton "has been told to tone down the gore" and is contractually obliged to ensure the film receives a PG-13 from the US censors.
